Essential Winter Storage Tips for Your Caravan

As winter approaches, many caravan owners in South Canterbury start thinking about how to protect their vehicle through the colder, wetter months. At Timaru Storage Company, we’re often asked how to best store a caravan outside over winter.

1. Clean and Inspect Thoroughly

Give your caravan a full clean, inside and out. Remove any grime, bird droppings, or salt to protect the exterior. Apply a coat of wax to add a layer of protection. Inside, clear out all food, clean the fridge, and open cupboards to avoid attracting pests or trapping moisture. Check for any leaks and reseal as needed.

2. Drain and Protect the Water System

Completely drain the water tanks, pipes, and toilet cassette to prevent freezing. If recommended by your manufacturer, use non-toxic antifreeze. Leave taps open and consider placing moisture absorbers inside to help prevent dampness.

3. Cover and Shield

A breathable, weather-resistant cover is a great investment. It should protect against rain while allowing airflow to prevent mould. Make sure it’s fitted well and securely fastened to handle strong winds.

4. Tyres and Battery Care

Inflate the tyres to the correct pressure. If possible, move the caravan occasionally to prevent flat spots. Remove the battery and store it in a dry place, or keep it charged if it needs to stay connected.

5. Final Checks Before Storing

Secure all windows and roof vents, but leave cupboard doors inside open to allow air circulation. A little airflow inside can go a long way toward preventing musty smells and mildew.
